Movie Critics Tear Apart Dasavatharam
Dasavatharam is the second dud in a row from Tamil film star Kamal Haasan.
If Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu (2006) was a bitter pill to swallow for Kamal Haasan’s fans, Dasavatharam is a bigger disappointment because of the heightened expectations raised by the ten roles Kamal plays in this movie.
An incomprehensibly mediocre movie, it’s a shame that Dasavatharam is the best that someone with 35+ years in the Tamil movie business can come up with.

A total mess of a story is compounded by a mostly so-so performance by Kamal Haasan (except in some roles like the Indian intelligence officer Balram Naidu, Patti and Rangaraja Nambi) and below par music.
Since Kamal Haasan also takes credit for the story, screenplay and dialogs in Dasavatharam, it’s only right that the major discredit for the movie should also accrue to this manga madaya (stupid fellow).
If the overall story - with the distracting side stories - is a jumbled mess, the dialogs are hopelessly banal. No life in them at all. Even a movie like Mozhi featuring a bunch of B-grade stars like Prakash Raj and Prithviraj had better dialogs.
Much of the movie centers around the efforts of a U.S.-based scientist Govind Ramasamy (Kamal Haasan’s primary role in the movie) desperately trying to safeguard a deadly germ vial (containing a strain of the Ebola virus?) and prevent it from falling into the hands of a really nasty element called Christian Fletcher (Kamal Haasan again).
The fight to grab the deadly vial that starts in the U.S. ultimately ends in India after many boring detours.
Some of the roles that Kamal plays in Dasavatharam like the activist Vincent Poovaraghan, George W.Bush, the singer Avtar Singh, the 7-ft tall Kalifulla Khan and the Japanese martial arts expert Shingen Narahashi were very poorly fleshed out. It was as if these characters were included just to hit the magic number of ten and justify the title of the movie. An example once again of the sloppy work by Kamal in the story department.
Makeup work for the many roles Kamal Haasan plays in Dasavatharam is a mixed bag. While the makeup was decent for the Indian RAW officer Balram Naidu, Rangaraja Nambi and Patti (grandma), it was sub-mediocre for some of the others, particularly Christian Fletcher and George Bush.
Mallika Sherawat’s pole dance number in Dasavatharam is one of the crudest and most disgusting dances we’ve had the misfortune to ever see in a long life. Plain awful. Even the late Silk Smita used to do a better job in these voluptuous dance scenes.
None of the songs had any magic in them. Himesh Reshammiya’s music failed to evoke much enthusiasm in the audience and several members of the audience at the Multiplex Cinemas in East Windsor (New Jersey) were walking out during the song/dance sequences.
One of the few saving graces of Dasavatharam was Asin Thottumkal’s performance. In her role as Andal, a conservative Brahmin girl from the temple town of Chidambaram as well as in an earlier brief appearance as Kothai, wife of a 12th century Vaisnavite devotee Rangaraja Nambi (Kamal Haasan), Asin brings some life to this dreary movie.
The other saving grace in Dasavatharam was the special effects, usually hopelessly crude in Tamil movies. Some of the Tsunami scenes as well as some of the action scenes were nicely done.
Dasavatharaam reminds us of all the weird things crazy people do just to get noticed or make it to the Guiness Book - eating 500 burgers, standing upside down for two days, walking backwards for three weeks, dancing on a buffalo’s back, fighting with a donkey or some other equally silly antic. Kamal Haasan tries a similar attention-grabbing gimmick - for the first time, 10 different roles in a movie. So what? It’s still a lousy movie and overall a bad freak show.
If a crappy fiasco like Dasavatharam is all that we can expect from Kamal Haasan after forking out $15 for a ticket, it’s time this dinosaur of the Tamil movie industry moves on to less taxing pursuits, like aadu, maadu maikara vela (a cowherd, grazing goats and cows).

The above review sucks big time. You have not got any divine right to call Kamal a dinosaur. If you want Kamal to take goats for grazing i ve gota job for you and its too descent a job to tell you.

Dasavathaaram - one of the great works?
Far from it.
Well said..you are soo right..its absolute waste of time and money..i was so disappointed to see his performance in dasavatharam..
I really appreciate the fact that Kamal Hassan had taken pains in getting into 10 different characters but neither the make up was done well nor the characters were well plotted..
I’m sure this movie is going to be a super duper flop and i guess they could have invested 1.65 billion in a better way,
bad luck kamal!
Trash Talk
Excellent review. Only Truth!
Kamal, starts his mistake from name ‘Ulaganayagan Kamal’. In Tamil he says ‘Ulaganayagan Kamal’ and he says the same in English ‘Universal Hero’
Keep on misusing the Tamil fans.
Just hype nothing from him…
Excellent review. Truth spoken!
Treat for kamal fans. Some of the roles may have been done away with as the reviewer pointed out, but on the whole a lot better than the other trash we see doled out on tamil movie viewers like Kuruvi,Billa etc. Worth a watch.
SearchIndia.com Responds:
We agree with you that Dasavatharam is a lot better than other trash like Kuruvi, Billa, Azhagiya Tamil Magan, Indiralogathil Na Azhagappan etc. But our expectation from movies featuring Kamal Haasan & Rajinikanth is also much higher.
Nice way to get attention…..
but one has to remember people are no more fools to believe u.. thanks for review……
SearchIndia.com Responds:
Have you even seen Dasavatharam?
Maybe, you ought to watch the movie first & then we’ll be willing to listen to your prattle.
OH MY GOD! what a blasphemous review???? This guy is either a total lunatic who escaped some wierd asylum, or a die hard vijay or rajini fan with vengeance for kamal. Can you beleive this guy said vettayadu vilayudu was a flop???
People like you with Such a screwed sense of reality are what completely screws tamil movies.
The movie is plain AWESOME! the idea of the movie, the final tsunami scenes and kamals plain genious are evident through out the movie. The spectacle of seeing kamal fight kamal watched by kamal was absolutely spell binding. The music score was average, but apart from that the screen play and the way the stories of all the ten characters cumulate in the end are what make this movie a master peice.
watch the movie with you family, you will love it.. and.. somebody please send this guy back to the asylum!

If Dasavatharam is what you consider a masterpiece, then you must truly be a head-less wonder.

Perhaps you ought to join Kamal.

This is not the Dina Thanthi blog.
Please post your comments in English. Occasional use of a Tamil word is fine but do NOT post the entire comment in Tamil. Otherwise, how would readers know what a schmuck you are.
The noise (your above comment) seems eerily similar to the noise emanating from red bottom monkeys.
Before I say what i want to say u should know that I love all your movie reviews and this one is no exception. But you don’t seem to appreciate the effort kamal put in making this film (u’r right, he could’ve done better!!), an effort which which we hardly see in tamil cinema anymore. I mean how often do u see the application of Chaos theory in a tamil movie, apart from other themes like religion vs. science, and biological warfare. It was a very good atempt to bring something new to commercial hell (tamil cinema.) Yes, the story and the screenplay were weak, and yes you have every right to criticize the movie for every single flaws it has, but you should also give credit in your review for using different concepts other than the usual formula (boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl…… enough said)
SearchIndia.com Responds:
You are right. Much effort has gone into the making of Dasavatharam. But sadly, it was all for naught.
By the way, there was a Tamil movie called E (Jeeva, Pasupathy, Ashish Vidyarthi & Nayantara) that also focused on biological weapons.
Hey, this is something offtopic. You should also review old movies like Sigapu Rojakkal, Uthiripookal, Anjali, other K.Balachandar, Balu Mahendra, J. Mahendhran movies, and recent past movies like Veyil, Anjathe, Paruthi Veeran, etc. Its just a thought/sugestion. Thank You
SearchIndia.com Responds:
We have seen many of Kamal Haasan’s movies including Sigapu Rojakkal (good), Aadu Puli Aattam, Sattam En Kaiyil, Moonram Pirai, Nayagan, Apoorva Sagodharargal, Thenali, Indian, Hey Ram, Virumaandi, etc. Veyil was OK (Pasupathy was very good).
[trash talk]………. first write a review of a film which you like …….let me check your pea size intellect.. never again in your live write a review for a film [trash talk]
SearchIndia.com Responds:
Pea size intellect?
You must have been looking in the mirror!
ur review is [trash talk] and is an absolute crap. u compare kamalji with any of the other indian heros who know nothing but doin same old crap and earning money and contributing nuthing but art. but wen kamalji does something in the name of creativity and succeeds too, some *ickhead reviewers like u publicise it wrongly, give wrong comments reviews etc, and hence the creativity is damped… and it fills the minds of other artists with a fear of being criticised “unnecessarily” and they too fear to try..
indeed.. even the “pea sized intellect” may not be available with u wen u compared “E” with Dasa .. u indeed should shop for some mind games to make u sharper.
first please temme who do u consider a benchmark before telling kamal’s movies are bad.. so that we can reply tat way cuz tat wud let ppl know what is ur expectation
each of kamalji’s movies is a masterpiece to me, whatever be the reaction frm the market.lot of effort has gone in for making tat. instead of appreciating that u just write some shit on ur blog. who experiments so much without fear? if u cant water the creativity in this living legend, better keep quiet and let him do what he wants. no body including kamalji wanted ur great review. nobody’s gonna suffer a loss if he doesnt get $15 frm u. all others are happy with his movies back here - in india i paid 400 bucks almost 10$ for the second day show and am satisfied tat it was worth it!!
SearchIndia.com Responds:
Some people are born stupid, some achieve stupidity & some have stupidity thrust on them.
Guess, you fall in all three categories.
1. Your “Kamalji” is not the only decent actor around.
There are plenty of good actors. India - Pasupathy, Nana Patekar, Vikram, Naseeruddin Shah, Konkona Sen-Sharma, Tabu, etc. Hollywood - Johnny Depp, Robert Redford, Robert De Niro, Viggo Mortensen (U.S.), Marion Cotillard (French) etc.
2. A lot of effort goes into every movie. In fact, a lot of effort goes into most things in life except aberrations like your above comment.
3. Dasavatharam was definitely not a masterpiece. It is a very mediocre work with a poor story, bad makeup for some characters like Christian Fletcher and George W.Bush, sub-par music and inadequate character development for some roles.
Dasavatharam is just another freak-show. Like all these asinine tricks people try to get their name into the Guinness records book.

SearchIndia.com Responds:
Dai Panni Munji (Hey, Pig’s Face),
This is not a Tamil blog. Pl post in English although occasional use of Tamil words is fine.
This is what we think of Kuruvi & Billa.
You are right. Dasavatharam is light years ahead of Kuruvi or Billa in quality.
But keep in mind that expectation from Kamal Haasan is also far higher than from podi pasanga (kids) like Vijay or Ajith.
“There are plenty of good actors. India - Pasupathy, Nana Patekar, Vikram, Naseeruddin Shah, Konkona Sen-Sharma, Tabu, etc. Hollywood - Johnny Depp, Robert Redford, Robert De Niro, Viggo Mortensen (U.S.), Marion Cotillard (French) etc. ”
I Didn’t know these were also being parallely reviewd on this page where I can see only dasa’s review.. man, u missed Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, n many more.. so better stop googling for info… and see what is being discussed..
first answer my question in my previous post:
“first please temme who do u consider a benchmark before telling kamal’s movies are bad.. so that we can reply tat way cuz tat wud let ppl know what is ur expectation”
if
1) not so strong story line (which a normal kamal movie always has)
2) make up not made into 100% perfection
3) “sub-par music” of course kamal was not the music director.
4) “inadequate character dev” ( ????? are u insane?)
are your problems, then u sure accept that kamal is gr8 in his work!!
his acting is wat is being praised and worshipped by us and he stood out distinctively ahead.
temme some other Indian movies where the double or more roles were better than any of Kamalji’s??
- appu raja/apoorva sahothargal
- michael madhana kamarajan
- indian
- avvai shanmugi
- anbe sivam (both the characters - before n after accident)
can these be compared with soem other punk here in India?? ?
SearchIndia.com Responds:
1. We have made reference to Al Pacino (for his fine performances in Scarface, Serpico, Godfather, etc) & Brando too on earlier occasions in this blog.
2. Are you a blithering idiot? Should we send you a book Learn English through Tamil in 365 days? As we clearly indicated in the Dasavatharam review, poor story, insipid dialogs, so-so acting by Kamal in some of the roles and weak character development are some of the glaring weakness - Kamal is responsible for all these flaws.
The roles of Vincent Poovaraghan, George W.Bush, the singer Avtar Singh, the 7-ft tall Kalifulla Khan and the Japanese martial arts expert Shingen Narahashi were very poorly fleshed out. It was as if these characters were included just to hit the magic number of ten and justify the title of the movie. In addition, there is the sub-par music & poor makeup for some characters. The makeup for one of the main characters in Dasavatharam Christian Fletcher is beyond pathetic.
Even tiny tots in Fancy Dress competitions in Vaniyambadi corporation schools would have better makeup than Christian Fletcher in Dasavatharam.
All of the weaknesses come together to deliver a freak show called Dasavatharam.
3. You write above: his acting is wat is being praised and worshipped by us
A lot of Tamils worship Khusboo too literally (via temples) & figuratively. Does that make Khusbhoo a great actress?
4. We are not comparing Kamal Haasan to podi pasanga (kids) like Vijay, Ajith, Simbhu etc. As we’ve said ad nauseum, ad infinitum, expectation from Kamal Haasan is always higher compared to the above kids.
5. It’s irrelevant to Dasavatharam review whether someone was better than Kamal in a double/triple role in the past. How does it matter what the price of Vengayya (onions) is in Villupuram or New Jersey? It’s not relevant to the Dasavatharam discussion.
first of all.. am not tamil.. and i can just understand tamil and speak to an extent.. all was learnt for kamalji’s movies.. I hail frm Jaipur and i have proficient skills in English.. so u dont have to suggest.. but its true that [trash talk] .. btw.. u may be a blithering idiot for writing such a worst review.. so go [trash talk].. and stop cursing the visitors to ur [trash talk] ..
SearchIndia.com Responds:
By your own admission, you only have a limited understanding of Tamil (we think you have a limited understanding of everything).
And here you are blabbering away to eternity about “Kamalji”, his old movies and Dasavatharam.
Did someone set fire to your tail, Hanumanji.
You write: I hail frm Jaipur and i have proficient skills in English
Who cares whether you hail from Jaipur or Bhagalpur or whether you are proficient in English or Mandarin. All we know is that you are deficient in commonsense or any kind of sense for that matter.
Scoot, kiddo.
Go play with your dolls. This forum is for grownups. Not for sophomoric clowns like you.
I read all your comments. everybody can express their own views. always keep it in mind that we don’t need to use harsh words to reply. educated peoples won’t do that.
thanks,
SearchIndia.com Responds:
Sure, Grandma. Everyone can express their views as long as they don’t abuse us, threaten us harm & use filthy language.
As you can see (if only you could), we don’t shy away from posting negative comments about our reviews.
I’m an ardent fan of Kamal Hassan.
what you said was right. Sub-par movie, unnatural make up’s, even though he has tried to justify tsunami the screenplay remained illogical and dud, ridiculous dialogues, high investment yet the camera work was not that good, asin thottumkal’ character tortured somewhat, Dasavatharam did’n't live up to it’s expectations.
First 10 mins of the movie and the tsunami graphics were really good. Some dialogues were enjoyable.
I liked your reviews for most of the films. This review too. But you have degraded yourself to shit just by writing some crap about kamal (manga madaya, dinosaur, etc,,).I think you have not realised his ingenuinity in anbe sivam, virumandi etc,,just for one let down it’s ridiculous to say these craps. It’s better you change it.
A request, try to review some old films of mahendran and balachander.
SearchIndia.com Responds:
For an actor with 35+ years in the film industry, to deliver a freak show like Dasavatharam is a disgrace. Only a Manga Madaya would do that.
We’ve seen Virumandi. Kamal was good in it but Pasupathy was a million times better.
We will try & bring you reviews of old movies from Mahendran & Balanchander.
Fair review,
I can’t believe Kamal crowned himself as ulaganayagan (means world hero). He is an excellent actor should focus that and leave other things to respective professionals.
What he is trying achieve? except me spending $15 and 3 hours of my precious time.
I made a decision not to watch any of his movies.
Dasavatharam is a milestone in Indian cinema and gives the right direction to the Indian cinema industry to step forward.
Not only kamal hassan’s best performances in this movie but also the techniques used in this film are wonderful.
1. I can remember I saw four kamal hassan in one scene and each role requires 10 hours of preparation and shooted in different days. Still you can feel like that each role is performed by different actors (thanks to Kamalji).
2. Especially the stunts scenes performed by fletcher kamal and japanese lady is really good.
3. The camera angles and visual effects used in this film are excellent. Don’t forget to watch the tsunami scene and eagle angle of chennai.
Don’t expect these masala items in this movie and you will enjoy!!!
1. don’t expect super hero stunts like flying 100 feet from floor
2. don’t compare this movie with high budget Hollywood movies like titanic(spent 1000 crore rs) but in this movie they spent only less than 100 crores for movie production
3. item songs or duet songs or boring love story.
This movie clearly gives us chance proud about our Indian movies
Compare Om Shanti Om (the worst picture ever done by khan) with this film
I feel pity for this site for having reviewers like this.
SearchIndia.com Responds:
1. You write above: Dasavatharam is a milestone in Indian cinema
Sure, Dasavatharam is a milestone freak show.
Read reviews from different critics of Dasavatharam here. We are not the only dissatisfied critics.
2. The Tsunami scenes were well shot in Dasavatharam. But that was a minor element in the movie. Overall, Dasavatharam was a piece of crap.
3. You write above: I feel pity for this site for having reviewers like this
We feel pity for your empty head. You are so blinded by your adulation for “Kamalji” that you are unable to objectively assess the movie Dasavatharam.
We agree with you that Om Shanti Om was not a great movie. We described it as a breath of stale air.
Yeah! I too agree with u! I love some of kamal’s movies and his passion on trying to make indian movies more visible to other countries. Hats off kamal.
But this movie “dasa…..” was a horrific movie! I know it’s a milestone for indian cinema to put in so much of graphics and stuff into a tamil movie! but this….. I was so happy when the movie was released! and went to watch it with tons of hope! but came out with a feeling that I can’t even express with words…..! I was so so damn disappointed….. and like someone said some of kamal’s makeup was damn horrific….. espcially the tall kamal wow! most of the kamal’s makeup was damn visible! it looked like it was done juz for the sake of showin in 10 kamal…..! this whole movie was like a show off for make up artist…. tatz all….. extremely sorry kamal! this was a damn disappointment….. Gudluck next time….! waste of time and money…..
The reviewer.. sheesh what do i say bout him… this site is completely biased ( against kamal) and the reviewer beleives he can prove everyone wrong by using language against those who get angered by his review. You think ur smart ass use of words would make u a smart ass???
Get real… Your review sucks big time and your response to each of the comments posted here are even more crap than anything else.
[trash talk]
Jeez… go get a life. Lol.. sucker!
SearchIndia.com Responds:
We are not biased for or against anyone. The fact of the matter is Dasavatharam sucks big time.
And we are not the only ones saying that. Look at the critical comments on Dasavatharam from by a whole bunch of reviewers.
I have always liked Kamal Hassan’s movies and there is no doubt that this movie did not turn out to be an exciting package on the whole but we still can’t totally deny the fact that he was excellent in most of the roles even thought they don’t fit into the story line very well. He has played his roles well individually, we need to agree on that.
After the movie i came back thinking that this is a very “OK” movie but after reading your very harsh review i really think that Kamal as an actor deserves some more respect keeping in mind his earlier performances.
SearchIndia.com Responds:
The audience deserves respect too keeping in mind their long-standing devotion to this actor.
You can’t shovel a movie like Dasavatharam down the throats of the audience & expect respect. Kamal is not Simbhu, Ajith or Vijay. A veteran with 35+ years in the movie business is not expected to deliver a freak show like Dasavatharam.
I haven’t seen this movie yet.. but heard the songs..
One of the songs (ulaganayagane) speaks only about kamal and his extradionary(!?) talents.. also expresses his excessive obsession towards Oscar.. so cheap..
what the hell this got to do with the storyline..
ordinary ones like vijay does the same shit of hero worship.. what way kamal stands out of that shit pit .. I don understand… After hearing that song itself I assumed this gonna be a very ordinary one and gonna be a flop.. same reflects in the review… my deep regrets to Ravichandran.. who gave many hits…
Hi Mr. Reviewer,
U talk about not abusing others over here, but I find you abusing some of them. If u r dare enough to write a review then u got accept others opinion about u.
R u the guy who likes mushy movies?
I am surprised u said Vetayadu Velayadu was a disappointment for Kamal fans, Excuse me, did u really understand the concept of the movie?
I am not a KAMAL fan but I admire his movies coz hez the only one who can bring changes to the boring cinema world. Letz be practical, Vetayadu Velaydu was an amazing story line and the way he tries to solve the case was simply superb. Do u remember the scene were he calculates the time the kidnap would have taken place? That was amazing.
If u think that movie was trash, then I would suggest u to visit and read few real crime stories in crimelibrary website. It would do a lot of good for your thinking ability and to know the reality and to be much broad-minded w.r.t to the things happening around u.
SearchIndia.com Responds:
Sure, we are willing to accept & publish all shades of opinons as long as folks don’t resort to abuse, threats & filth on our blog just because they don’t like what we write. We respect Gandhi but we are not willing to turn the other cheek.
You write above: R u the guy who likes mushy movies?
We just like good movies - Tamil, Hindi, English, French etc.
Vetayadu Velayadu was worse than an episode in Law & Order.
I like your reviews - I dont watch the movies you write about but I come here often only to read your critique. I love the way you handle most of the jerks here! Your responses are hilarious!
Some guys have claimed they haven’t understood chaos theory which plays such an important part in the film. As a physics student, I’ve decided to explain it a bit so that people can appreciate the brilliance of the film.
What is Chaos?
Basically a chaotic system is one wherein long term predictions are impossible. Like for example, if I push a car, I know that it is going to move and it will continue to do so if I go on pushing it on and on. However, in a chaotic system, this situation cannot be predicted over a long period of time. Weather, for example, is a chaotic system. No matter how good your instruments are, you simply cannot predict the weather with 100 per cent accuracy over a long term basis and forecast it.
What is the Butterfly Effect?
It is the most important component of a chaotic system. Basically, small perturbations results in amplifications which completely destroys the original nature of the system and makes prediction impossible. If a butterfly flaps its wings in Africa, it could result in a cyclone in USA.(Mark the word COULD.) A highly dumbed down explanation of the butterfly effect is in the film Anniyan, where Vikram’s sister dies because a liquor shop owner sells liquor on a dry day.
OK, how does Dasa incorporate it?
In essence, Dasa talks about eight characters who are inconsequential as such, but are integrated in a larger picture. Without Bush, the plane would have been called back. Without Shinghen, Govind would be dead. Without the tsunami, the world would have been destroyed. Even Krishnaveni (the old woman) plays a very important role. If she had not put the vial in the idol, maybe Govind would have recovered it then and there and a powerful weapon would have been unleashed. The very fact that it went into the idol meant that it was being accelerated to its destiny. Without Kaifulllah Khan, Govind would have never escaped… the list simply goes on.
OK, so does the film talk about theism or atheism?
Neither. It talks about how humans drive the destiny of the world.
The idol that is drowned in the sea along with Rangarajan in 12th century by Chozha king results in a fault being developed at the bottom of the ocean and creates tremors more than 800 years later. These tremors result in the Tsunami. This again is a classic case of Butterfly Effect wherein a seemingly inconsequential event (the drowning of the idol) saves Tamil Nadu from being wiped off the face of the earth.
Now tell me, does THIS movie lack a story? This movie has the most beautiful story ever attempted in Indian cinema. Unfortunately, Indian viewers and critics are obsessed with the “boy meets girl” and “revenge” themes, so they fail to see the story in this master piece.
– Chaos Theory
SearchIndia.com Responds:
Thank you, Einstein.
If Kamal Haasan had any brains, he’d have hired you to improvize the story. Seriously, not kidding here. You have a nice way of putting together things in a cogent manner.
The story penned by Kamal does not come through neatly in the movie. It was so “chaotic.”
Dasa is mentioned in wiki page on butterfly effect..
have a look..

A good review. I thought Tamils are phlistines and incapable of appreciating a good, non commercial movie. But I was wrong because somebody a Tamil From America wrote this excellent review. I agree with him. If U can let me know who wrote this piece I would like to involve intellectual conversation with him.
it amazes me at how contradictory people get at times…
first a person states we shud not be unfair and take sides..then the same person starts his comment by sayin..as a kamal fan…ithink the movie was amazing…bullocks!
like duh!ur his fan, even if his movie was a massive flop ull still defend it sayin it was amazin n that people dont know how to appreciate his acting…
honestly, kamal hassan deserves a pat,no,lots of pats on his back for his effort.his energy in the characters portrayed were good but like one of the comments i read, which said he cud have done more for certain characters were true too…
the make up,cinematography and acting by the main characters like asin were slightly above average…but my friends…dear ardent kamal diehard hardcore ill do anythin for kamal fans, whut was exactly the story of the movie?…..
a vial that has contagious deadly virus, rich guy wanna sell it to make more money, all the unnecessary drama, boogie nights wit malika///wtf…whut was all tht for? plus the music was seriously bad mate…except for the last song that was ok actually…
now proly all u hardcore fans out there are gonna have much to say…but if u have conscience, ask ur self is this movie worth all the hype that was created? pls dun only consider the fact kamal did 10 diff roles but also the strength of the stroyline…music and stuff…
cheers folks..till the next review on yet another star rajini n his movie kuselan…god knows whut to expect from tht..cheers
hahaha.
Great Review. I have been Kamal fan all my life and I am done with him.
few more additions to the above review
I thought Asin was the usual Heroine in tamil Movies crying all the time as wife of Nambi and too loud and boring as Andal
The CG was abysmal. Kamal’s effort on trying to compete with Hollywood movies is a joke. Terminator 2 made 17 years back has better CG than dasav. The Tsunami scene was very average as well. If you want to see a good CG on a disaster watch movies like Twister, Day After Tomorrow and I am Legend.
I still respect Kamal. I dont think he is a aadu…I think he is a legend . Kamal should stick to simple movie making like Guna, Anbe Sivam, Michael Madana Kamrajan. All this Hoopaholla must stop with making a movie for 100 crores. As long us our stars like Rajini , Manoramma and KB give rave reviews which are un real and keep pegging one another up, we would never move away from adulation which is not objective .
I went to a theatre with 15 in NJ. Many were kamal fans. All were disappointed
SearchIndia.com Responds:
We loved I am Legend too. Can’t remember much about Terminator (seen them long back).
You are right - in terms of special effects, Bollywood & Kollywood are way behind. We doubt they can ever catch up. Have you tried watching Netflix movies on a Roku box ($99). Good.
This review about dasavatharam is completely crap. People if you have stayed on this page long enough to come read my post.. trust me, the movie is worth watching.
Things about this review that completely throw it off target are:
1. This guy says vetayadu velayudu was a flop! to quote he says its worse than an episode of law and order.. what kind of wierd comparison is that??? a tamil movie and an english sit com???
2. He says the screen play is bad.. bullcrap!! the screen play is fantabulous and a few videos on youtube would prove that to you.
3. the last song about kamal singing he is ulaga nayagan… see the song and u will understand why the song is worded that way… the pains he has gone through to change costumes which takes minimum 3 hours to put on and he had to do it for ten different roles!! and when rajini calls himself superstar, or vijay calls himself ilaya thalapathi, or simbu little super star, its all perfect.. but when kamal is ulaga nayagan.. there is a hue and cry…
4. and this is most valid point… the reviewer has no brains…plain and simple… He just believes he has the rights to slander all kamals fans here.
watch the movie.. and you will love it!

We are not the only reviewers unhappy with Dasavatharam.
Stop frothing at the mouth over an objective review of Dasavatharam.
Hi People…
Dasavatharam is definitely below par for the kind of money spent…
We definitely expected better dialogues, Music, Cinematography, screenplay, and editing.
Kamal simply got into unwanted territories through the movie with some awful and irritating crazy Mohan dialogues. While the plot was international the execution was utterly the Indian B grade. But what has to be appreciated is an attempt to deliver a strong theme The “Chaos Theory”…Though the 10 different get ups were not up to the mark, the reasoning given to construct the 10 avatars is spell bounding….”The typical Chaos theory phenomenon”….How each and every event is affecting subsequent occurrences and finally the end result. The 10 characters unwind pretty well and all the 10 contribute to the vial reaching the bay before it could be destroyed by Tsunami.
We really have to appreciate Kamal for this unconventional attempt but cannot forgive him for a very very poor execution.
Better Luck next time to Kamal and fans like us!!!
I think the review is correct and written with logic with out any bias. I too have seen this crap yesterday. The only tamil movie after Ayutha Ezhuthu and I regret my cross my decision not to see a tamil movie again. I had more hopes for Kamal but after watching this movie, he has little left to get spoiled.
Com’on guys get on to the reality. Don’t think that I am Rajini fan to do this. Instead you guys should come up with open mind and discuss with out any bias.
so much hype has been given to the film… it’s not up to the expectation may be….
Ok. I agree with the first poster that you either do NOT know how to write a review, or that you have a wonderfully bad taste in films. Out of all the reviews you have written, you have only praised a few, but mostly, 90% that is, are denounced. For Example, one of the ones you praised was Pokiri. “Pokiri - Fine Pongal Gift for Tamil Movie Lovers”. Any story that has the typical “Love” component as a large part of its story is automatically juxtaposed among the myriad of Tamil films, where the hero tries to get the heroine to love him, etc. Pokiri is another “typical” tamil film. But Dasavatharam is a different film overall. You have NEVER seen, in a Tamil film in which some 12th century event is connected to present day. The script for Dasavatharam is very well written, in comparison to the “typical” tamil film we see today. If you can not like this movie, that means you like the old love story, where the hero and heroine finally get together in the end. Love is a minor component in this film, and to bestow the title of “Breathtakingly Boring” is complete bullshit. The film was very entertaining, as the film was fast paced, and no where was there too much dialogue. And the costumes were all great, and all of Kamal Haasan’s mannerisms were perfect. To denounce such an attempt is completely ridiculous. Kamal has tried to make all of his characters share equal screen time, except the “main” hero and “main” villain characters, who obviously have more. Though the first half hour may be tough to understand, the rest is a joyous ride. And the fact that this film did not have random dances, in a dream or such, makes it completely different to the orthodox tamil film. There was only one such “dance”, but it was done in a neat manner, as a concert performance. It was necessary. The fact that Dasavatharam was a new attempt makes it a stand-out movie. To call it crappy is outrageous.
SearchIndia.com Responds:
1. You write above: Out of all the reviews you have written, you have only praised a few
True, we praise few movies, Tamil or Hindi. Simply because most of the Tamil & Hindi movies are utter garbage. Most Indian stars can’t act for the life of them. What would you have us do - sing paeans to every stupid Tamil/Hindi movie or every lousy actor like Abhishek Bachchan or Ajith Kumar. Of course, Kamal is a better actor compared to most Indian stars.
2. You write: one of the ones you praised was Pokiri. “Pokiri - Fine Pongal Gift for Tamil Movie Lovers”. Any story that has the typical “Love” component as a large part of its story
In Pokiri, the love/romantic angle did not constitute as large a part of the story as the violence. Love was secondary to the violence angle involving Ali Bhai (Prakash Raj) & Vijay. Pokiri was an entertainer and its box office results says it all. Vox populi, vox dei. But Vijay’s successive movies Azhagiya Tamil Magan & Kuruvi were pathetic.
3. You write: And the costumes were all great
Costumes & makeup go hand in hand.
When the makeup was so atrociously bad for some of the characters in Dasavatharam, it’s hard to focus on their costumes alone. And what about the costumes - what was so unique about it? Costumes in Dasavatharam did not stand out in Dasavatharam as it did in Shekhar Kapoor’s Elizabeth I & II.
Did you watch Dasavatharam in Black & White? The makeup was so ghastly and downright hideous for George W.Bush & Christian Fletcher that it’ll probably enter the Makeup Hall of Shame. A downright disgrace for any movie. What the heck was the director K.S.Ravikumar doing - sleeping?
4. You write: You have NEVER seen, in a Tamil film in which some 12th century event is connected to present day
Whatever may have been the original motivation in Kamal Haasan’s mind, Dasavatharam ended up as a disconnected, disjointed piece of crap whose sole objective seems to be to achieve some kind of record for playing 10 roles in a movie. How does it matter whether Kamal did 10 roles or 24 roles if some of the characters (see review) were badly developed.
Ultimately, the law of unintended consequences played out here - Dasavatharam ended up as a freak show.
5. You write: If you can not like this movie, that means you like the old love story, where the hero and heroine finally get together in the end.
Get off you crack trip. There are so many genres in movies. You seem to think there are only two genres: Dasavatharam & Love Stories.
We just noticed that your itchy fingers had put out another comment (since it’s mostly a repeat of your above comment, we’re not publishing it in its entirety but will respond to one of the points made in your second comment).
You write in the second comment: Perhaps the Chaos Theory is too much for the Tamil audiences.
We disagree with your condescending, supercilious, arrogant attitude toward the Tamil film audience. Inherent in the above statement is a disdain for Tamil film audiences because you think they are not as smart and intelligent like you. Voltaire must have been thinking of you when he wrote - He who thinks himself wise, oh heavens is a great fool.
You schmuck, contrary to what you think, The Chaos Theory is not too much for the Tamil audiences. Only chaotic films like Dasavatharam are too much for Tamil film audiences.
looks like the critic cant take any critiques him/herself. Mighty pathetic and defensive come backs to comments!

I really wonder if Kamal can ever act like a normal person. All the characters that he chooses are sooo exaggerated. His spontaneity die a long long time ago and what is left is just contrived studied highly unnatural stuff which he camouflages with makeup (ugh)

SearchIndia.com Responds:
Given the filth in your comment (that we have removed), you have a nerve advising others.
This is not a Rajni fan forum nor a gathering place for retarded Kamal fans. This is a forum for objective Tamil film reviews.
Purinjada, madaya (understood, idiot)?
This reviewer likes Pokiri and not Dasa… funny..
There is ‘Nothing’ in pokiri(Remade from telugu.. Vijay copied every dot from MaheshBabu) could be marked as ‘Innovative’… (It has only a disgusting double meaning song.. ‘vadu manga oorudhu.. thair sadam ready pannu’).. if the reviewer likes that.. just imagine the ‘taste’ of the reviwer.. so dont bother about the review… its not true..
Kamal leaves lot of space in the story and screenplay for the audience to imaging and fill it up..
for example.. in the end Tsunami comes.. the guys who beleive god can take it as.. Lord renganatha has saved the world.. others… ofcource can follow with the butterfly effect (As I have mentioned in my previous posting) of chaos theory..
This is properly guided in the song ‘Kallai Mattum Kandaal kadavul theriyaadhu’ (If u see only the stone, the god is not seen, and vice versa)..
this is a style of film making were the creators leaves the space for imagination to the audience… you can feel this style in movies like ‘unusual suspects’, ‘basic instinct’ where the viewer has to fill up the untold part of the story/screenplay according to their imagination..
There may be mistakes in the project in make-up, screenplay, Self praising song, music etc.. and we can very well critisize it.. but at the same time we should appreciate the effort to bring a interesting/different movie.
guys.. am tired with Vijays, Perarasus and Simbus..
if you call Kamal a Dinosur and say Dasa is bad.. and call Pokiri is gud.. then you will never be able to see good movies in Tamil.. Dasa may not be equal to hollywood standards.. but someone has to build the first step of a long staircase to improve the quality of Tamil Cinema.. I think Kamal is one of them trying to do it..
SearchIndia.com Responds:
1. If double-meaning songs or dialogs disturb you, you have no choice but to avoid Tamil movies.
Bawdy double entendres are par for the course in Tamil movies. Directors love it and Tamil movie fans lap it up.
If you are a Kamal Haasan fan, you’ll know that even some of his old movies had risque dialogs and song/dance sequences. Remember that crude Kamal-Silk Smita Nethu Rathiri song-dance sequence from Sakalakala Vallavan.
So, let’s not deify Kamal Haasan or put him on a pedestal above other Tamil stars.
2. You write above: There may be mistakes in the project in make-up, screenplay, Self praising song, music etc
What does the etc in your above sentence include? Story, acting and is anything else left to mess up?
In our humble view, the whole Dasavatharam movie was one big mistake.
You opened a thread saying that the movie is trashed by the critics but why don’t you open a thread for a movie which you dislike but is liked by other ctitics.
and before saying kamal anything you just go and watch pushpak, appu raja ,hey ram and others to know about the acting of hasan
SearchIndia.com Responds:
Sure, we will should the opportunity arise.
Readers: The above comment by ajayrocks refers to the thread Movie Critics Tear Apart Dasavatharam
Wow man! What a firing from the fans for a crap movie. I do like Kamal and his serious or light movies (Salangai Oli, Mahanadhi, Nayagan, Pesum Padam, Sippikkul Muthu, Michael Madhana Kamarajan, Thenali, Avvai Sahnmughi, Devar Magan). But this movie is a crap. Please stop the crappy comment that Tamil Fans don’t understand Chaos Theory and Butterfly Effect. Tamil’s can easily understand it (by googling it. It is not a rocket science). The same Tamil’s made few nice movies as super hit like Mozhi, Kadhal, Paruthi Veeran, Sethu and many nice films.
By praising this crappy movie, you guys expose your bias and nothing else.
I have to give two thumps up for the reviewer to bravely and strongly to openly talk about this movie.
To the reviewer: Lately I started watching Iranian movies and really liked the Crimson Gold, The Circle, Children Of Heaven, Color of Paradise… Can you recommend some nice French movies? I have to wash away the remembrance of this crappy Dasavatharam movie.
SearchIndia.com Responds:
You write above: Can you recommend some nice French movies?
We suggest Blame it on Fidel. We watched this movie at Cinema Village (they get nice foreign movies here) in NYC last year and just loved it. The little girl Nina Kervel-Bey in Blame it on Fidel does a far better job than most of our Tamil & Hindi film stars.
Another French movie we enjoyed was La Vie en Rose featuring Marion Cotillard.
We’ve heard good things about Roman De Gare (French) and hope to watch it soon.
We also recently watched and liked Kar Wai-Wong’s Chinese movie In the Mood for Love.
By the way, Thenali was a bad lift of What about Bob?
I dont know about US.. but in India Dasa is doing gud..
surely a box office hit.. but donno how long it will go..
I figured that I would be disappointed with Dasa. So didn’t want to waste 15$. Guess I was right. Will wait for the Ayngaran DVD to come out. This review sounds just about how I will feel if I see this movie. Sivaji and Pokkiri are the only two tamil movies I have watched in theater over the past 5 years.. I enjoyed them like a day out in the theme park.. but when I go to a Kamal movie, I expect a 3-out-of-4 star (on the hollywood scale) movie.. he has delivered many such movies, in my opinion.
Agree with your chastening of Kamal’s self-indulgent experiments. Can’t believe he screwed up with the prosthetics again.. They were nauseating in “Indian”.. but 12 years after that can’t he still figure out that they look so shabby!
I’d have to say that you were very harsh on Kamal’s acting abilities. He was on par with Pasupathy (who got the meatier role) in Virumaandi.. but Pasu can never do some of the roles that Kamal has taken up — Kamal is the greatest Indian actor in my opinion. But the madayan’s lack of humility doesn’t make us root for him when he fails. But have to admit that he still has a lot to offer to Indian cinema.
Loved your attack on the review-bashers/kamal-defenders. These guys are so used to the reviewers taking all the crap they are doling out.
SearchIndia.com Responds:
You write above: but Pasu can never do some of the roles that Kamal has taken up
Let’s wait & see if Pasupathy can do varied roles well. Kamal has had a much longer innings in movies compared to Pasupathy.
helloz…..i am kind of new here
anywayz…..
well…..i USUALLY dont like movies which r not thrillers or epic fantasies (with the exception of one film namely, Ghajini and now this one) ….
but heh, i think the “chaos theory” in mathematics has been portrayed in a relevant way in this movie. I cant believe how kamal came to know about it :O i can find a lot of events which lead to some other event…(one of the most prominent being, the killing of yuka by fletcher which “stimulated” Shinghen Narahashi to go after the killer who in fact was responsible for the villain’s death
)
….and i doubt that there is vague connection between nambi being sunk along with the idol of vishnu and the tsunami…..
all in all, this movie was not unrealistic like anniyan which shows a man with multiple personality disorder obtaining super human capability….”anniyan” sure must have some strong Adrenal glands
…….soo it remains to be one of the very few tamil movies which i like
who is the joker running this website..it looks like one big municipal trash bin. The only thing i find in this website is trashing of indians who r trying to take india to the next level, starting from vikram pandit to kamal hassan.
If somebody has thought that shortcut to fame can be achieved by trashing big names, all that can be achieved is ending up as a toilet paper, as this site has proved.
I think all the people who trash the movie dasavatharam for the sake of trashing it dont deserve anything more than a kuruvi or kaalai.if u guys think vulgar vivek comedies and 3rd grade story lines are all that is needed to make a tamil movie, u guys should change the layman villager mindset asap.i hope all u guys grow up quickly and stop pretending to be intellectuals.
I would definitely recommend the author to get some psychiatric counselling before the matter gets out of hand.
SearchIndia.com Responds:
1. You write above: who is the joker running this website..it looks like one big municipal trash bin.
Did you mistake this site for the cesspool that you mistakenly consider your head.
2. As CEO of Citibank, Vikram Pandit is butchering thousands of jobs even as he feeds like a pig at the trough by taking millions of dollars in options/compensation & Kamal Haasan makes crappy freak shows like Dasavatharam. And according to you, these two great specimens are taking India to the next level.
Only a dickhead like you could think of something as asinine to type away. Please don’t ever try to take an IQ test because. there are no instruments devised as yet to measure YOUR level of stupidity.
3. You write above: u guys should change the layman villager mindset asap
So, you fatuous mongrel you think villagers are idiots while you are the reincarnation of Einstein. For a blithering idiot, you really give yourself airs.

5. There should be a law to prevent jackasses like you from going near a keyboard.

Pure trash is pure trash, I mean the movie and I can’t agree with you more.
I also admire the way you are coping with heaploads of nitwitted kamal fans commenting here! But I have just one remark. Playing 10 or 20 or all the roles in a pathetically ridiculous movie doesn’t require any particular talent as such.
The trailer stupidly adverstises that for the first time, Kamal Hasan (note: it doesn’t say an(y) actor)is acting in 10 roles, but that doesn’t mean anything, and it has nothing to do with Guinness book of records. 99% of the time the people who do stunts for the Guinness book are absolutely amazing. Their extraordinary skill, courage and endurance can be really inspiring. But I resent the way you dismiss all of them as crackpots, desperadoes trying to gain some attention! Have you ever seen the Guinness Book program on AXN? Had you seen, I don’t think you would have commented thus. And I am waiting to see an explanation for your reiterated highly inappropriate comparison.
SearchIndia.com Responds:
Your point on the daring folks who land a place in the Guinness Book through their skill, courage and endurance is well-taken.
Hello, this is in response to all the hoopla about chaos theory that many clueless but proud kamal fans are associating with Dasavatharam. I am not interested in tamil cinema (except for the great songs and dances I watch on tv), but the talk about chaos theory got me interested in this film, and to my surprise I found absolutely nothing at all related to it, except for some empty talk. First of all, let me clarify to you all who have two grey cells in your brains, chaos theory / butterfly effect is constantly evident everywhere in all our lives, yeah even in our mundane lives. In other words, small incidents, especially minor mistakes and oversights, can have huge consequences that can change one’s entire life and the lives of people around us. For example, if one could travel back in a time machine and alter a small critical thing in one’s past, one could be in a totally different course of life at present (’senstivity to initial conditions’). So, please understand once for all, “chaos” is present everywhere in our world, and much more so in all the incredibly coincidental events that happen ad nauseam in Indian movies in particular, and all movies/stories in general. It is not anything clearly outlined or illustrated in Dasavatharam’s unique story (whatever that is). Let me repeat, there is nothing at all in Dasvatharam that specially portrays chaos theory so that common people can understand it. Minor, seemingly unrelated or distant events, can have major consequences. It happens all the time. If you want some examples, see some movie, any movie, or think about your own lives: what would have happened if only this small… It is possible that the whole thing could have gone on a different track. Desperate Kamal fans are interpreting the movie in this perspective, but anything at all, all history, can be interpreted in terms of chaos theory. “Cleopatra’s nose, had it been shorter, the whole face of the world would have been changed.” This is chaos theory, in essence, and this is history. So don’t go bragging that Dasavatharam depicts chaos theory, instead try to spot one story or event in history where chaos theory is not directly or indirectly applicable.
This totally confused movie_lover guy (he could be my orkut friend unfortunately) posing as a physics expert gives such a long explanation of chaos theory in a comment above - and he has no clue what he is talking about. He says: “The very fact that it [the vial] went into the idol meant that it was being accelerated to its destiny.” Now the concept of destiny is completely opposite to chaos theory! There are only so-called ’strange attractors’ in chaos theory, not destiny. Destiny means the course of some dynamical system is predetermined or foreordained, not spontaneously and unpredictably evolving as in chaos theory. So this movie is about chaos theory or destiny? Make up your minds, kamal fans. Either way it is not one teeny weeny bit unique, if anything it is more ridiculous by far than normal movies. The guy gives a narrative of the movie saying “if this thing didn’t happen, that wouldn’t have happened, and so on and so on, and the list goes on.” But the list goes in any movie, even in all our lives, even if they are only slightly eventful. People are really getting desperate to make something out of nothing, and it is really pathetic! “The idol that is drowned in the sea along with Rangarajan in 12th century by Chozha king results in a fault being developed at the bottom of the ocean and creates tremors more than 800 years later.” What a load of bull. Heavy weights or ships falling onto ocean bed don’t create fault lines on earth’s surface! And the tsunami epicenter didn’t occur off Tamil Nadu, but thousands of miles away in pacific ocean. You idiots stop watching stupid movies and start reading children’s encyclopedias to learn a little about the world around you. And if you are so anxious to watch a reasonably good movie that is directly about butterfly effect, see “Sound of Thunder” (2005) which is also dubbed in several Indian languages.
SearchIndia.com Responds:
Bravo!
Before I write something about the movie, let me tell you that I am an ardent fan of Kamal. If he does a good job, I appreciate it and if he fails, I accept it.
Coming to your review, well, I notice that you have absolutely no interest in appreciating Kamal’s talent, firstly in terms of acting. You said that it was a “so-so performance”. Tell me something, who in India could have donned the 10 roles to perfection as Kamal. Whether its the ‘finger call’ of the American ex-CIA, the pitch tone perfection of the Telugu police officer, the innocence or ignorance of the tall Afghan, the posture and walk of the Japenese and Dalit or the use of language by the patti. Well this requires detailing and Kamal has done it to perfection. I hope I have answered that you have no right to say that Kamal did a “so-so performance”
The movie’s concept works on a very simple premise. Its a take on the butterfly effect and tries to fight disorderliness but always reuslting in chaos. You have understand how the 10 avtars of Vishnu culminated to map it agains the movie’s concept on Chaos Theory. The concept is simple but you have to understand the presentation which is complex and deep. If you havent, you will definitely come up with such a review
Yes, the visual effects were a let down (considering the budget was focused on make up). some of make-up were over done (patti, Bush and Fletcher - esply when you see close up). The music and background score was very bad as well..
Indian audience has been treated with this new concept by none other than our Ulaga Naayagan and its a very good effort
SearchIndia.com Responds:
You write above: Tell me something, who in India could have donned the 10 roles to perfection as Kamal
As we’ve said ad nauseum, ad infinitum, what the heck is so great about doing 10 roles. In our view, that’s just a silly gimmick to attract attention.
No, they were not done to perfection. Far from it.

As Shakespeare would say, all sound & fury signifying nothing.
