In the overall ranking at the U.S. box office, Tashan slipped to #40 for the second weekend from #24 for the opening weekend. Total gross for Tashan amounted to a measly $428,923.

Overall, Tashan has fared miserably at the U.S. box office compared to some recent Bollywood films.

In its review of Tashan, SearchIndia.com wrote:

Utterly bereft of anything worthwhile and an ugly amalgam of bad logic, rotten story, pitiful acting, ordinary photography and ear-damaging music, Tashan is a complete horror show, the likes of which have not been seen in Bollywood in a long, long time.

Tashan Fares Miserably at U.S. Box Office

Tashan has fared badly at the U.S. box office with one of the poorest openings for a Bollywood movie in recent months.

For the opening weekend (April 25-27, 2008), Tashan came in at No-24 with a gross of $301,226.

U Me Aur Hum Crashes in U.S. - Down 73.3%

U Me Aur Hum, Ajay Devgan’s ugly copy of the fine Hollywood flick The Notebook, has crashed at the U.S. box office in its second week (Please click here for U Me Aur Hum opening weekend gross collection data.)

For the April 18-20 weekend, gross collections for U Me Aur Hum fell 73.3% to $171,503.

Besides starring in U Me Aur Hum, Ajay Devgan also directed and produced this mediocre movie.

In the overall ranking at the U.S. box office, U Me Aur Hum slipped to #29 for the second weekend from #19 for the opening weekend. Total gross for U Me Aur Hum amounted to $903,680.

Overall, U Me Aur Hum has not fared well at the U.S. box office compared to some recent Bollywood films. Neither has Krazzy 4, which has done much worse.

Eros was the distributor for both U Me Aur Hum and Krazzy 4 in the U.S.

Take a look at how some recent Bollywood films fared in the second weekend at the U.S. box office:

U Me Aur Hum Fares Badly at U.S. Box Office

(U Me Aur Hum Crashes in U.S. - Down 73.3%)

Compared to other high profile recent Bollywood movies, U Me Aur Hum, Ajay Devgan’s crude lift of Hollywood movie The Notebook, has fared badly at the U.S. box office.

In its opening weekend (April 11-13),  U Me Aur Hum grossed a mere $642,923.

Jodhaa Akbar (Hrithik Roshan-Aishwarya Rai), Om Shanti Om (Shahrukh Khan-Deepika Padukone) and even Race (starring a bunch of B-Grade Bollywood actors) did much better than U Me Aur Hum.

Let’s compare U Me Aur Hum with a few recent Bollywood movies like Race, Jodhaa Akbar and Om Shanti Om.

In their opening weekends, Jodhaa Akbar grossed $1.3 million, Om Shanti Om grossed $1.76 million while Race grossed $802,254.

In the opening weekend at the U.S. box office, Om Shanti Om debuted at No-11, Jodhaa Akbar at No-19, Race was No-18 while U Me Aur Hum came in at No-19.

Released in 89 theaters in the U.S., U Me Aur Hum Continue Reading…

Race Has So-So Box Office Debut in USA

Compared to Jodhaa Akbar (Hrithik Roshan-Aishwarya Rai) and Om Shanti Om (Shahrukh Khan-Deepika Padukone), Race has not done that well in the opening March 21-23, 2008 weekend at the U.S. box office.

According to the March 21-23 weekend box office numbers, Race grossed $802,254 and came in at No-18 at the U.S. box office.

In their opening weekends, Jodhaa Akbar grossed $1.3 million while Om Shanti Om grossed $1.76 million. Om Shanti Om debuted at No-11 and Jodhaa Akbar at No-19.

Released in 96 theaters in the U.S., Race had an average gross per theater of $8,356, which again was much lower than Jodhaa Akbar and Om Shanti Om.

Hrithik Roshan Loses to Shahrukh Khan in U.S.

At the U.S. box office, the Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai combo has proven to be a lesser draw than the Shahrukh Khan-Deepika Padukone duo.

According to U.S. box office numbers, Jodhaa Akbar came in at No-19 with a weekend gross collection of $1.3 million although it was a four-day weekend because of the President’s Day holiday on Monday. UTV distributed Jodhaa Akbar.

When Om Shanti Om was released in November last year, it came in at No-11 with a weekend gross collection of $1.76 million. Eros Entertainment distributed Om Shanti Om.

Dus Kahaniyan Debuts at No-25 in U.S.

Bollywood movie Dus Kahaniyan did not set the U.S. box afire but didn’t do that badly either considering it’s an offbeat Hindi movie.

Dus Kahaniyan rolled in at No-25 at the U.S. box office for the December 7-9, 2007 weekend with a gross of $176,726.

Released in 55 theaters in the U.S, Dus Kahaniyan had an average gross of $3,213.

When we watched Dus Kahaniyan at Regal E-Walk theater on W.42nd St (near Times Square) in New York City on Saturday afternoon, we counted a total of 14 people in the hall.

Aaja Nachle Fares Badly at U.S. Box Office

Madhuri Dixit’s comeback movie Aaja Nachle has failed to resonate at the U.S. box office in its opening November 30-December 1 weekend dealing a severe blow to its producer Yash Raj Films.

U.S. box office numbers show that Aaja Nachle brought in an embarrassingly low $257,500 and debuted at No-22 in its opening weekend.

Aaja Nachle’s unimpressive performance at the U.S. box office is hardly surprising considering it’s a mediocre movie that’s been almost universally panned by critics.

Aaja Nachle’s opening is real lousy when you consider that even a miserable dud like Laaga Chunari Mein Daag did $320,987 in its opening weekend recently although it debuted at No-32.

In its opening weekend, Om Shanti Om came in at a respectable No-11 and had a gross collection of $1.76 million while Saawariya’s first weekend gross was $542,192.

Aaja Nachle was released in 66 theaters in the U.S.

Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal Fares Badly in U.S.

Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal has turned out to be a dud at the U.S. box office for the November 23-25 weekend.

At the box office, Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal brought in a pitiful $66,011 and came in at No-40.

Featuring John Abraham, Arshad Warsi and that non-actress Bipasha Basu, Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal is the story of a U.K. football club Southall United struggling to survive.

The folks behind Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal’s do not seem to have had much confidence as the movie was released in only 32 theaters in the U.S.

In contrast Om Shanti Om was released in 114 theaters in the U.S. and Saawariya in 85 theaters.

Om Shanti Om had a first weekend gross collection of $1.76 million while Saawariya brought in $542,192.

Well, John Abraham is no Shahrukh Khan, not even a poor man’s Shahrukh. As for Arshad Warsi, guess he’s lost without Sanjay Dutt.

Saawariya Collapses in U.S.

In one of the ironies of life, Saawariya - the better movie of this Diwali -has collapsed in its second week at the U.S. Box office while that crass, crude Shahrukh Khan film Om Shanti Om continues to rule in the U.S.

For the November 16-18 weekend, Saawariya’s gross collection came in at $150,208, down 72.3% from last week.

Saawariya seems to have been impacted by negative publicity in the media.

In contrast, Om Shanti Om has held up better with an estimated weekend gross of $756,342, down 57.1%.

Om Shanti Om Trounces Saawariya at U.S. Box Office

Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan’s reincarnation-based film Om Shanti Om handily beat Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya featuring debutantes Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor at the U.S. box office for the November 9-11 opening weekend.

According to U.S. box office numbers, Om Shanti Om came in at a respectable No-11 with a weekend gross collection of $1.76 million. Eros Entertainment distributed Om Shanti Om.

Based on Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novella White Nights, Saawariya was way behind at No-24 and a weekend gross of $542,192. Saawariya was produced and distributed by Sony Pictures.

Om Shanti Om was released in 114 theaters in the U.S. compared to 85 for Saawariya.

For Shahrukh Khan, the performance of Om Shanti Om at the U.S. box office during its opening weekend must come as welcome relief since his previous film Chak De India fared badly in its opening weekend (August 10-12, 2007) coming in at No-20 and grossing only $351,887.

Om Shanti Om also did a bit better than Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, which came in at No-17 and grossed $1.35 million in its opening weekend (Aug 11-13, 2006).

We thought Saawariya was the better picture but the people have spoken with their wallets at the box office. And their verdict was clear - more desis in the U.S. preferred to watch Om Shanti Om than Saawariya during the Diwali weekend.

Eros’ well-oiled publicity machine must have also helped Om Shanti Om to do well. Other Bollywood producers urgently need to pay attention to their PR machinery if they want their movies to do well at the box office.

Dhamaal a Damp Squib in USA

Dhamaal has fared badly at the U.S. box office in its first weekend.

Starring the Bollywood convict Sanjay Dutt and a bunch of C-grade actors like Riteish Deshmukh and Arshad Warsi, Dhamaal’s take at the box office for the September 7-9, 2007 weekend was a mere $166,339.

Released in 39 theaters, Dhamaal came in at No-34 in the U.S. box office for the Sep. 7-9 weekend.

Compared to Heyy Babyy and Chak De India, Dhamaal’s performance in the U.S. has been disappointing.

Heyy Babyy was No-24 in the box office chart for the August 24-26, 2007 weekend with a gross of $612,486.

In its first weekend (August 10-12), Chak De India starring Shah Rukh Khan came in at No-20 and grossed $351,887.
